My Christmas Day at TBC – by one helper!

"Christmas – it conjures up pictures of happy families, sitting around the fire, Santa bringing presents, a juicy turkey with all the trimmings, and being too full to eat Christmas tea. Oh, and of course, the obligatory afternoon games and the Queen’s speech.

christmas_day.jpg"Having spent a few years working in hotels, I’m quite used to a different type of Christmas, as it can be the busiest time of year. I’ve spent several Christmas Days at work, so when I heard they needed more help with Christmas lunch at church I thought I’d give it a go.

"I can honestly say that this was the most relaxed kitchen I’ve ever worked in! No chefs running about swearing, no crying waitresses and certainly no disgruntled guests – this was a party – and all were invited! Having wondered, a few months earlier, if the lack of help meant that the event wouldn’t go ahead, God provided seven people to work in the kitchen.

"Did I miss having a ‘traditional’ Christmas? Let’s see. Happy families – we definitely had that – and on a much larger scale than was I used to – the ‘family’ included so many people over the day who would otherwise have been sitting at home on their own. We had a juicy turkey with all the trimmings – complete with sprouts and bread sauce for the real die-hard traditionalists, and I for one certainly couldn’t manage more than a little sandwich or two for tea. We all sat down after lunch for the Queen’s speech, and then had a lovely afternoon of games and entertainment, including saxophone solos and poetry. And to top it all off we even had a visit from Santa – bringing presents for everyone.

So did I miss anything? No, after all isn’t Christmas supposed to be spent with family – only I now don’t think of my ‘family’ in quite the same way. Spending the day with a wide range of people, of all ages and backgrounds, gave a completely different meaning to the word. It was an absolute pleasure to be involved, and I understand now why some people come back year after year!"
